I actually saw one of these phones in Dec. of 2011. The quality is good but, I'm concerned about the availability or getting penalized for heavy usage. I stream music in my car, use the GPS a lot, and watch videos. I ultimately decided to stick with my Google smartphone but, I switched over to a prepaid plan from T-mobile that costs about $30 / month. There's a page here that shows you how to set it up https://sites.google.com/site/cheapsmartphone/ It's $10 more than the Republic Wireless plan but you get 5GB of data on the Tmobile network. I can still switch to WIFI when I go out to restaurants or out for coffee. But, I also know that the 3G signal will work on the road no matter how much I am using.

Good advice Bobby - many of us are making money through these cards as well - so heaping a lot of condemnation on Suze isn't a good approach.

Thanks! You are right...we could get a better picture of the total cost of ownership by just doing some due diligence before buying. And in the case of diesel cars, driving style and annual miles driven can dramatically alter the payoff, but it's still another data point consumers should look at before making a big purchase like this.

Bobby, I love this. I have always been a bit skeptical about the economics of green cars, but 27 yr payoff is pretty long. Really we could do the same Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis on any buying choice.

Theravenandthepearl - Republic Wireless has announced that they will be ditching the Cellular Usage Index. The service is truly unlimited now through at least the end of the beta period, if not, longer. See this blog post for more details: http://2mf.in/tBsOph

Thanks Bethy! It's definitely been a squeeze to rent or buy in SF for a long time. I just can't believe how crazy the rental market has become, particularly over the last 6 months. Good luck!

Great analysis, Bobby, though also a bit depressing. My husband an I would love to get a two bedroom apartment sometime soon, but even with both of our salaried jobs, it would be a squeeze. Here's hoping housing costs start to decrease.

It's time to strongly consider moving up and taking advantage of one of the many new car deals out there. You don't have to buy anything really expensive. Take the Honda Fit for example. Loads of room, a reasonable price, great deals, and MPG to save money.

Don't become a member of the repair of the month club. I was a charter member and it's not worth it.
